The legal profession in India has undergone many transformations over the last few decades. With the advent of various industries, the law aspirants have options of joining various corporate houses, law agencies, law firms, litigation, administrative services and much more, apart from practicing in courts. This is what makes Law an attractive career option.However, the profession is facing a gradual shift from traditional litigation to the adaptation of various modes of Alternate Dispute Resolution. The organizations’ reliance on their legal departments is becoming more pronounced which makes the role of qualified legal personnel all the more important.


It is a centralized test for admission to 19 National Law Universities in India. Apart from these, 43 other education institutes and two public sector institutes are also eligible to use these scores. The test is conducted by the 19 participating law schools in rotation. The test was first conducted by National Law School of India University in 2008 and by National University of Advanced Legal Studies conducted it in CLAT-2018. It is a two-hour admission test consisting of objective type questions on Elementary Mathematics or Numerical Ability, English with Comprehension, General knowledge and Current affairs, Legal Aptitude and Legal Awareness and Logical reasoning.

    1. There is no upper age limit for UG Programme in CLAT.
    1. With regard to minimum percentage of marks in the qualifying examination (i.e., 10+2), the candidates must have secured:
    1. i) 45% marks in case of candidates belonging to Unreserved/OBC/Specially Abled Persons (SAP) and other categories
    1. ii) 40% marks in case of candidates belonging to Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe (SC/ST) categories.
  1. Candidates who are appearing in the qualifying examination in March/April 2019will also be eligible for appearing in CLAT 2019. However, at the time of admission,they should beable to produce an evidence of their passing the qualifying examination, failing which they shall lose their right to be considered for admission.

 CLAT Exam Pattern

There will be a total of 200 questions which need to be solved in 2 hours. The mode of exam will be paper and pen based in 2019. There is 1 mark for every question with each wrong answer attracting a penalty of 0.25 marks. The paper will have five sections. The details of the number of questions in each sections are as below:

  • English/Verbal Ability: 40
  • Mathematics/Quantitative Aptitude: 20
  • Logical Reasoning: 40
  • General Awareness: 50
  • Legal Aptitude: 50
